Today, we covered much information, but two questions linger--
1. Where does Trophies fit in? Does your grade level teach the information texts from Trophies? If not, will you adjust the curriculum to include them? How will you incorporate information texts?
2. How do we utilize information texts and still provide consistency, manageable logistics, for our tutors? (Could tutors be trained in strategies to teach reading via information texts?)
3. What other questions does your grade level have?

We think tutors should focus on skills that their students need. If we focus on what they need, then the type of text won't matter.
Currently we are using our Trophies and informational texts separately. There are some stories in the Trophies series that are non-fiction, but it doesn't match the benchmarks we're addressing at the time. We use our non-fiction texts in other blocks.
It depends on the needs of the students.

We can all stay on the same story but incorporate informational text during the week that compliment the weekly story and units that we are on.
This is my first year teaching, but I think that tutors could be trained in useful strategies to teach informational text.
Grade K has a limited number of informational text included in Trophies. Most of Trophies resources are fiction books. The informational text covers some of our social studies and science standards. We will incorporate outside informational resources. Tutors will review the basic Kindergarten readiness skills.
Grade 5 uses Trophies as a means to provide consistency within our grade level. However, we discuss other resources that we use in our classrooms and share ideas about what has/hasn't worked. We find that having a set schedule for the Trophies helps the tutor in preparing his/her own "lesson". Mrs. Henderson has also been great with helping our grade level with other activities that we have planned for Language Arts. She makes the necessary adjustments when we work with novels and newspapers/magazines.
